A UK train operator requested our support to bring clarity to causes of driver shortfalls and establish a process for forecasting driver resilience.
Utilising standard system exports of A&U data and rosters we studied annual and seasonal levels of crew availability at each depot, patterns of day-to-day fluctuation, and the combined impact on resilience and rest day working.
Bridging a gap between operational roles and senior management we were able to increase understanding of the complex resourcing equation, improving dialogue with stakeholders.
Building on our diagnostics, we configured and implemented our Staffing Resilience Model to provide a forecast of driver resilience by week for the next year. This highlighted and quantified significant risk points, affording more time to plan mitigations and communicate necessary changes to customers.
We led the creation of standardized industry KPIs for train crew, a critical initiative of the Rail Delivery Group’s Traincrew Programme.
Working closely with a consortium of operators, we established definitions, counting rules for seven KPIs, and modern data collection systems. We then developed an interactive dashboard and insightful reports while maintaining active dialogue with operators and stakeholders.
This initiative has revolutionised the industry's comprehension of train crew resourcing, offering a shared platform for discussion and benchmarking. Our first annual report on train crew resourcing has informed key next steps in addressing priority issues.
We implemented for a leading UK train operator an industry leading capability to map train crew route and traction competencies onto diagram skill requirements, to provide a real-life measure of diagram coverage risk.
We designed a modern, intuitive dashboard interface that transitioned seamlessly from employee level analysis to aggregated link and depot level analysis to support long-term training strategy development.
The interface was underpinned by a sophisticated data model consisting of millions of data points and calculations, refreshed at a click of a button, with the regularity required to support ongoing competency management processes.
